The water-spouting whale from Molde's city coat of arms carries a story about the sea as a turning point. In the years before Molde received city privilege in 1742, herring was the salvation for many in Romsdal, and the whale's rush into the fjords was understood as a sign that luck was on the way. In this motif, the old belief lives on: the forces of nature that can both surprise and provide, and a coastal culture that has always had its eyes turned towards the sea.
The print was taken at the Molde ferry pier.
