Original - Lillehammer
In the middle of Storgata in Lillehammer, the Birkebeiner motif is cast in iron, as a small reminder of how the city's stories can be found right down to the street level. Here, people walk in a daily rhythm between shops and cafes, while the imprint preserves a line back to the saga, symbol and city identity.
The motif shows the Birkebeiner, taken from the municipal coat of arms originally drawn by Andreas Bloch in 1898. The figure points to the saga of the Birkebeiner who carried the king's son Håkon Håkonsson over the mountain to Trondheim in the winter of 1205–1206, a tale of protection, will and responsibility. Above the shield is the wall crown with three towers, following a European system of the time where the towers were supposed to be a symbol of protection for the citizens.
