Original - Haugesund
This manhole cover from Haugesund was made as a very concrete commemoration of the 100th anniversary of Our Savior's Church – a motif that both celebrates the church as the center of the city and brings together several of Haugesund's strongest characteristics in one rounded story.
In 2001, Harald Helgesen and Steinar Iversen designed the lid as a street-level anniversary sign, where history lies right where people walk. The motif contains five Haugesund motifs: the three seagulls that symbolize herring and seafaring, the town hall, Haraldsstøtta on Haraldshaugen, Our Savior's Church and "Fiskerne" – the two sailors taken from the statue that stands in front of the church.
The lid was officially unveiled on March 6, 2001 by then-mayor Finn Martin Vallersnes, precisely on the occasion of the 100th anniversary, and thus carries the anniversary with it as a clear frame around the entire motif.
